GEORGE NEWS - At the Garden Route District Municipal Council Meeting on Wednesday 27 July, two new councillors were welcomed, the title of Alderman and Alderlady were conferred on two DA councillors and three employees were recognised for their long service at the municipality.
New GRDM councillors
Patrick Buys of the PBI was inaugurated as a GRDM councillor. He replaces the late Mercia Draghoender. DA Councillor Joseph Johannes Bavuma of Mossel Bay was inaugurated as a GRDM councillor.
Bavuma replaces DA Clr Anco Barker, who will be serving on the Mossel Bay council full-time.
Alderman and Alderlady
The titles of Alderman and Alderlady were conferred on two DA councillors, Jerome Lambaatjeen and Nompumelelo Ndayi. In a recent council meeting both FF Plus Councillor and Deputy Mayor of the GRDM, Gert van Niekerk, and ANC Councillor Claudia Lichaba also received their special titles as Alderman and Alderlady respectively.
The title is bestowed on councillors of the GRDM upon commencement of his/her term as mayor, deputy mayor or speaker of the council.

Any member who obtains a minimum of 10 points on the following scale are also awarded the title: (i) One point for every year of service as a councillor at one or more municipalities and it need not be continuous; and (ii) one additional point for every year of service as a member of the mayoral committee.
Long service awards as announced by Speaker Georlene Wolmarans:
40 Years of service - Nellie Meyer started working for this institution when it was still known as the Klein Karoo District Municipality, on 13 May 1982. Her first job was that of cashier clerk and over the years she upskilled herself to become the De Hoek Mountain Resort manager. Meyer is the “mother figure” of De Hoek Mountain Resort. Her passion for the resort makes each guest feel like they are staying at their “second home”. The Garden Route District Municipality thanks Meyer for her excellent and selfless service to the district.

30 Years of service - Japie Strydom, Garden Route District Municipality Manager: Maintenance, Construction, and Mechanical Services was recognised for his 30 years of selfless service to the municipality. He has not been off sick since the day he started at the district. Thank you, Mr Strydom, for your selfless and dedicated service to the district.

30 Years of service - Henry Jansen, known as Boeta Hen, started his career at Garden Route District Municipality when it was still known as the 'Streeksdiensteraad' in 1992 when he was only 26 years old. Over his 30 years with the GRDM, he has worked under various managers at the institution's Hessequa sub-office. " I want to thank Garden Route District Municipality, the council and management for allowing me to work here. All of the best, and may only goodness and favour rest upon this organisation," said Jansen.
Chief of Municipal Health, Haemish Herwels, had the following to say about Henry Jansen: "As an individual, Jansen played a huge role in my life. He has always been the sound one in the office, always the same person. His work ethic has always been admired. I want to congratulate him on his milestone of 30 years of service, which seems like a lifetime, and I wish him all the best with his retirement".
