GEORGE NEWS - A call is going out to all men - and women - of George to attend a meeting on Sunday 15 September to show their solidarity against gender-based violence. The meeting, organised by a local activist, Bonisile Desha, will take place at 15:30 at the Thembalethu Community Hall.
The meeting was originally arranged for Monday 9 September, but despite it being widely announced on social media, only 18 people turned up and it was agreed to postpone it till this coming Sunday.
Desha said he was very disappointed with the turnout of men to the event.
"Although I am very disappointed about the turnout I acknowledge the presence of those who took time to come. I also acknowledge the circumstances that could have hindered people to come, such as family, personal and work commitments. Maybe the day and time were also not perfect," he said.
According to Desha, people supported the idea on social media, but when it came to reality their comments did not materialise. He encouraged people to practise what they preach, especially on matters as serious as this.
"Be involved and play a leading role in the fight against gender-based violence," he said. "We want men to go back to basics and be the protectors of women and children, not the other way around. We urge them to be responsible in society where their behaviour will influence a boy child."
