GEORGE NEWS - After nearly a decade Gericke's Point, at the most eastern tip of Paradise Ridge in Sedgefield, has been reopened as a launch site to the paragliding and hang-gliding community.
The launch site is situated on the same property as the luxury lodge Simbavati Fynbos-on-Sea.
Working closely with the South African Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association (Sahpa) and the local paragliding and hang-gliding community, the manager of Fynbos-on-Sea, Frikkie Reynders, has permitted the site to be officially resurrected.
The site will be accessible to all recreational pilots from the end of this month with the official opening taking place at 17:00 on Sunday 27 November, at the Bistro at Fynbos-on-Sea.
All pilots and non-pilots are welcome to join.

"As a paragliding and hang-gliding community we are extremely excited and grateful to have the site returned to its former splendour. Furthermore, paragliding will be an addition to the other adventure activities offered to guests at Fynbos-on-Sea," said Bilbrough.
To make use of the site
- Pilots must have a current Sahpa licence or Sahpa foreign membership. Please ensure you have your licence with you.
- The site has a basic site grading with a minimum of 100 flights.
- Students need a minimum of 15 flights and have to be accompanied by an instructor.
- Pilots and their visitors are requested to report to the Fynbos reception to pay R200 per person daily fees and to sign an indemnity form. They will then be transported to the take-off site in an official lodge vehicle.
- The daily fee includes transport to the launch site, a recovery from Swartvlei beach car park, and a free beer or coffee/tea at either the Bistro or the Fynbos Bar in the main lodge should the Bistro not be operational on the day.
