GEORGE NEWS - George municipal officials shone at the Garden Route Better Together Games, walking away with gold in four of the sport codes. This annual event is sponsored by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
Johannes Tarentaal and John Muller from Civil Engineering Services won gold in dominoes, with the cricket and touch rugby teams also winning gold. Julbreme Frolick from Civil Engineering Services won gold in the 100m sprint.
George Municipality hosted the event last week Friday at the Rosemoor Sport ground. Altogether 1 916 officials of different government departments participated in 18 different sport codes. The full-day programme started inside the stadium due to the pouring rain. As the weather cleared, the different sport codes started. George Municipality was represented by 186 officials.
Mayor Melvin Naik welcomed everyone to the Garden Route District. He said sports brings people together and advised everyone to be competitive but also forge friendships. He thanked all of the sponsors, including Old Mutual, Nedbank, Coca-Cola and especially the department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, for choosing George as host city this year.
Ebrahim America from Eden Sport Council said he is proud to address the athletes and that sport allows for a healthy society. Major-General Oswald Reddy said all of the departments involved have a job that involves service delivery.

"In order for our officials to do a good job, they need a healthy body and mind." He said he has noticed, particularly in the South African Police Force, that those officials who are active have a higher performance in the workplace and book less sick leave.
He thanked the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport for this initiative.
