GEORGE NEWS - Municipal Manager Trevor Botha and Mayor Melvin Naik were the subjects of two items tabled at a special closed council meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
Councillors are tight-lipped about the meeting in which the suspension of Naik and Botha was discussed.
The item on Botha relates to an act of alleged financial misconduct in connection with the George Integrated Public Transport Network (GIPTN) provincial funding.
It is understood that Botha's case was referred to Council's disciplinary committee to conduct a preliminary investigation into the allegation.
The board has seven days to present its findings. In a front page article on 14 June, George Herald reported on the background to the prepayment arrangement between George Municipality (GIPTN) and the Provincial Department of Transport.
This arrangement has been questioned by Chief Financial Officer Keith Jordaan.
In a report issued earlier by Botha, he said that this is the accepted modus operandi and that it has been done since the inception of GO GEORGE.
It seems that the allegations against Naik in terms of the 'breach of conduct of councillors' will be dealt with by Council's disciplinary committee.
