GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEOS - Local community health workers and lay counsellors are participating in a protest march from Hope Street this morning, Wednesday 22 November, to the district office of the Department of Health in York Street.
They are to hand over a list of demands to the department which include that provincial government permanently absorb them into public service, as has been done in some other provinces.
The march was organised by their union, the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (Nupsaw) that accuses the Western Cape Government of dragging its feet in implementing a resolution of the Public Health and Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Council (PHSDSBC) which pertains to appointing these workers in the public service.
The resolution dates back to 2018.
Among their demands is also a request for being paid a danger allowance and that the lay counsellors working in clinics be included when integrating the community health workers into the public service.
