GEORGE NEWS - Much-needed maintenance on the historic George Post Office building cannot be done "right now" because of cash flow problems at the South African Post Office (Sapa).
However, if there are individuals or businesses who are willing to attempt a renovation project in partnership with the Post Office, they are invited to come forward.
According to Johan Kruger of the communications division of Sapa, the Malmesbury and Wellington post offices were recently renovated thanks to a partnership with the local community and businesses, and the generosity of the local community.
"The Post Office area manager will use the same approach in George and we hope that together with the local community, we will be able to restore the building to its former stature," said Kruger.
He responded to the complaint of a George Herald reader who is upset about the neglect of the building.
Any member of the community or businesses who are willing and able to help are asked to contact Dean.Stephens@postoffice.co.za.
"We are looking forward to working with the community of George," said Kruger.
Since 2018, three post office branches have closed in the main municipal areas in the Garden Route - one in Mossel Bay (Danabaai branch) and two in the George municipal area, namely George East and Garden Route Mall.
The roof of the George Post Office needs cleaning.
