GEORGE NEWS - The Minister of Local Government, Anton Bredell, has ordered an investigation into alleged maladministration, fraud and corruption at George Municipality.
The news was announced in a press statement by Bredell’s office this afternoon.
The George Herald has sent enquiries to Bredell’s office and the George Municipality, and will report on the matter in this week’s paper (12 September):
Statement: George - Minister orders investigation:
The Provincial Department of Local Government has been tasked to investigate allegations relating to maladministration, fraud, corruption and/or any other serious malpractice at George Municipality.
This decision has come following an assessment made by Anton Bredell, the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.
“I am of the view that the allegations that were brought to my attention require further investigation. Accordingly, I have authorised an investigation. This investigation will focus on - amongst other matters - the George Integrated Public Transport Network and irregular appointments made at the Municipality. No stone will be left unturned.”
Bredell says the investigation is being conducted in terms of section 106(1)(b) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act 32 of 2000), read with section 7(1)(a) of the Western Cape Act.
“The Western Cape Government prides itself on taking strong action against any allegations of corruption and acting on wrongdoing without fear or favour. We will see this through to the end and we hope to have the matter concluded as soon as possible.”
