GEORGE NEWS - Much to the relief of George residents, black bag collection resumed last week Friday. The municipal teams will be working late every day this week to clear the three-week backlog of black bags. Municipal spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose confirmed that no additional service providers are needed to do the job.
In addition, the Civil Engineering Department has resumed all its services. "Contractors were temporarily appointed to assist with the most urgent matters," said Edwards-Klose.
A positive case of Covid-19 in the municipal cleaning section and a strike by essential municipal workers caused a massive delay in refuse removal, and placed additional stress on sewerage-related services. However, the workers had agreed to resume work last Friday.
According to Edwards-Klose, further discussions with the unions will continue through the correct channels. Director Community Services Walter Hendricks apologised for the inconvenience caused.
The collection of green and blue bags will continue as usual, on the same days as the black bags collection schedule.
