GEORGE NEWS - A mother was left devastated after her three-month-old baby boy passed away at an unregistered day-care facility in Thembalethu on Monday 8 July.
The baby was brought into George Hospital and was declared dead on arrival.
It is believed that the mother dropped the baby off at the day-care in Zone 7 on Monday morning and went to work. When she came to fetch him in the afternoon the doors of the day care were closed and she heard kids crying.
She went inside looking for her baby and, finding that he was not breathing, she rushed him to the hospital. At the time she went looking for her baby there was no adult supervision inside the day care.
Thembalethu Police communications officer, Captain Dumile Gwavu, confirmed the incident. "The police attended the incident at George hospital and were shown the three-month-old baby that had passed away. The cause is not known at this stage and the police opened an inquest docket," he said.
Detective commander Lieut-Col Eric Julies said they are waiting for the results of the postmortem to determine the exact cause of death. He said the mother of the baby is very traumatised and they are currently unable to get more information from her.
Julies confirmed that no arrest has been made at this stage.
