CRIME NEWS - Police last night confiscated an unlicensed firearm and several rounds of ammunition from a man at his home last night, 23 May.
This follows the swift response to information by members of the Garden Route Crime Combatting Team deployed in George.
According to Warrant Officer Chris Spies, Southern Cape police spokesperson, the police "cornered" the man at his home.
He said the members were doing patrols when they received information at around 22:45 about unlicensed firearms being kept at a residence.
The team, in conjunction with members from the George Crime Prevention Unit, deployed to a house in a residential housing estate in George.
"A search of the premises ensued which led the team to the bedroom where the police found a pistol, gas pistol and 7.65 mm rounds. The police confiscated the pistols and 29 rounds of ammunition," said Spies.
"The occupant of the residence was unable to produce a licence for his possession of the firearm and ammunition. He was subsequently arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition."
The suspect (39) remains in police custody and is expected to make his first court appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court on Monday 25 May.
