GEORGE NEWS - A 17-year-old boy from Thembalethu has died following an alleged assault in Asazani, prompting police to launch a murder investigation.
According to information received, the teenager and four friends were walking in Tabata Street on Friday 14 November, when they were reportedly attacked by a large group of young men.
The teenagers attempted to flee, but the 17-year-old fell and was allegedly beaten with knobkieries and other blunt objects.
He was taken to hospital for treatment and discharged the following morning. However, he later died at home.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed the incident and said an inquest docket was initially opened.
“The case was changed to murder following further investigation into injuries sustained,” he said.
Spies added that the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation and that the suspects are still at large.
