GEORGE NEWS - Police confiscated drugs valued at about R50 000 and arrested a 20-year-old suspect during a joint Safer Festive Season crime-combatting operation in Laingsburg in the early hours of Friday morning.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies, the arrest followed a routine vehicle checkpoint conducted by Laingsburg police in collaboration with local law enforcement officers.
“The operation was conducted at about 00:50 on Friday, 9 January 2026, at a roadblock on Voortrekker Road,” said Spies. “Police members stopped a minibus taxi that was travelling towards Beaufort West.”
He said officers became suspicious when they noticed a parcel being thrown from one of the vehicle’s windows as it was being stopped.
“Upon investigation, the members found a plastic bag containing drugs. The parcel was positively linked to one of the passengers on board, who was subsequently arrested,” Spies confirmed.
Police confiscated a quantity of tik as well as 1 016 mandrax tablets during the operation.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear in the Laingsburg Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
Spies said the arrest and seizure form part of ongoing Safer Festive Season operations focusing on major entry and exit routes into the province.
“These operations will continue for the remainder of the holiday period and beyond, as police maintain a strong presence to combat crime,” he added.
