GEORGE NEWS - Continued efforts by police to combat drug-related crime have resulted in the arrest of five suspects and the confiscation of mandrax, khat and dagga during separate operations in Laingsburg and Groot Brakrivier.
In the early hours of Friday 27 March, at about 04:00, Laingsburg police conducted a vehicle checkpoint along the N1, stopping a passenger bus for inspection.
During a search, officers discovered two bags containing khat.
Three men, aged 41, 53 and 57, were arrested in connection with the find. A fourth suspect, a 25-year-old passenger, was also taken into custody after being found in possession of a small quantity of dagga.
In an unrelated incident on Wednesday 25 March at around 21:00, Great Brak River police acted on information about a vehicle allegedly transporting drugs. Members intercepted the vehicle in Gesiggie Avenue, Wolwedans.
A search of the vehicle led to the confiscation of 100 mandrax tablets and 15 grams of tik. A 49-year-old man was arrested on a charge of possession of drugs.
All five suspects are expected to appear in court once formally charged.
Police confirmed that these arrests form part of ongoing midweek operations aimed at curbing substance abuse, which is often linked to serious and violent crime. Similar operations will continue across the province.
