GEORGE NEWS - The Thembalethu District Court on Tuesday 21 April convicted and sentenced Izunna Ekedirichukwu Ibeh (45) and Shamolee Zaanmare Arends (32) for dealing in drugs after both accused pleaded guilty.
The convictions follow an operation by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit based in George, assisted by the Mossel Bay K9 Unit, who executed warrants of arrest.
According to a Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, the team conducted surveillance on the accused and, on several occasions, observed them actively dealing in drugs.
The pair was arrested on 7 November 2017. During the operation, drugs including crystal methamphetamine (tik) and Mandrax, with an estimated street value of R2 455, were seized.
Ibeh was sentenced to a fine of R20 000 or six years’ imprisonment, while Arends was handed down a fine of R15 000 or five years’ imprisonment.
