GEORGE NEWS - If smells alone could cure, the wholesome, healthy aroma enveloping the customer upon entering the Health&Living shop should keep the doctor away for more than a day.
The shop, situated at St George’s Square, stocks more than 200 herbal teas, homeopathic remedies as well as vitamin supplements, including Solgar and Viridian and the best quality natural and organic health foods.
The latest arrivals on its shelves include biodegradable disposable nappies, biodegradable unbleached toilet paper and other eco-friendly products.
Furthermore, Health&Living stocks the largest range of aromatherapy oils, natural cosmetics, fluoride-free toothpaste and natural household cleaning products, including Soap Nuts.
The store has expanded to include a juice bar where vegetable juices and wheat grass energy shots are made freshly every day.
They also stock wheat grass trays and juicers.
Salad rolls, stone-ground savoury muffins and seedballs make for some healthy take-away snacks.
Wholesome frozen meals and free-range chickens can be found in their freezer.
When available, customers will find fresh seasonal organic vege-tables on the shelves, supplied by local organic farmers.
Some of the local favourite products include free-range eggs, goat's milk cheese, 100% stone-ground sour dough rye, Karoo pesto and alfalfa sprouts.
"We also cater for special diets such as gluten-free and diabetic and have a range of Japanese foods, including sushi, miso, tofu and Japanese green tea. Should you need something to make the Japanese visitors to the Soccer World Cup feel at home in George, we can assist," says Karin Kruger, the owner.
Health&Living has a long history, even before it was esta-blished in George 10 years ago.
This family business was founded nearly 50 years ago in Pretoria by Dr Augusto Braunholtz as Continental Herbs Agency, the first commercial health shop in South Africa.
Back then the shop consisted mainly of imported herbal teas and homeopathic remedies. For nearly 35 years the business was owned by Dr Richard Skarba and his wife Miene.
Customers from all over South Africa and abroad enjoy purchasing their health products from Health&Living when they visit our shores. "Our customers often comment on how fortunate George is to have a world-class health shop that compares with the best in South Africa and London," says Karin.
"Our staff is trained and experienced to offer you sound advice on natural treatments and food supplements to treat your health problems and our new foot clinic can assist with problems such as cracked heels, in-grown toenails and fungal infections."
