BUSINESS NEWS - The idea for My Vellies was born during an extended business stay in Pretoria, when Jano and Judy Olivier began discussing the possibility of building an online store.
What started as a simple idea, to create a website and possibly sell it, soon turned into something much bigger.
When the Covid-19 lockdown began, the project took real shape in Somerset West, Western Cape, where the couple found time to refine their concept and build what would become one of South Africa’s favourite small business success stories.
As South Africans turned to local products during the lockdown, My Vellies quickly found its stride. The business began offering beautifully handcrafted leather vellies and bags made by skilled artisans, using locally sourced materials and traditional techniques.
“Orders started coming in faster than we expected,” recalls Jano. “It was clear that there was a real demand for authentic South African craftsmanship.”
In 2023, the Oliviers relocated My Vellies to George, bringing their growing e-commerce brand to the heart of the Garden Route. Today, the company continues to collaborate with local artisans who ensure that every pair of vellies and each leather bag is made with care, durability and attention to detail.
Locally made, proudly exported
While My Vellies is deeply rooted in South African tradition, its reach extends far beyond local borders. The business ships nationwide and has also begun exporting internationally, sharing the heritage of handcrafted vellies with customers across the world.
From humble beginnings to national recognition
What started as a simple lockdown project has grown into a respected brand known for quality and authenticity. My Vellies has even partnered with large corporate clients to produce custom-branded vellies, proudly showcasing South African design and workmanship.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” says Judy. “We never imagined that an idea formed in Pretoria would one day reach customers all over the world.”
For Jano and Judy, My Vellies is more than a business - it’s a celebration of local craftsmanship and South African pride.
