GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality is busy with road work to attend to defects and damages caused to Mission Street (section between Protea Road and Hibiscus Street) and Fern Street (section between Mission Street and Protea Road), which served as detour routes during the construction of both Mission and Protea Roads.
Construction period
The construction on Mission Road will be from 23-27 February and to Fern Street from 2-3 March.
There will be height differences between the two lanes while milling and asphalt construction work is in progress.
Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians must exercise extreme caution, especially during wet conditions and when visibility is poor and at night. Vehicles with low profile tyres and motorcyclists must take extra care.
Working hours
- Monday to Friday: 07:00 to 18:00
- Saturday (as needed): 07:00 to 14:00
Impact on traffic
The remedial work will require the milling and removal of existing bituminous layers as well as milling and removal of existing gravel base layers. After the milling operations, will follow placing of new bituminous base layers and surface layers.
The affected section/lane of work for the day will be closed for traffic.
Traffic will be accommodated to flow in an incoming direction along Mission Road, to accommodate the directional flow of current work along Protea Road, with the assistance of Flagmen throughout the Works.
Work will commence after the morning peak each day and are envisaged to be completed by 18:00 each day when one-way detours will be applicable.
Outside of construction hours, normal traffic flow will be applicable.
Consideration will be given to the peak traffic at school.
