GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - Never before over the past 18 years have I seen such a diverse audience at George Arts Theatre, cramped together on all available seats, awaiting Dr Riaad Moosa to take the stage.
His comedy show What's the Point? is currently touring the country and made stops in the Garden Route last weekend, with a show in George on Sunday afternoon, 23 February, following performances in Plettenberg Bay (21 February) and Knysna (22 February).
Moosa has been called an award-winning comedian, presenter, writer, actor, and even "The Comedy Doctor". After watching What's the Point?, I would like to add the title "philosopher".
He opens his show by sharing insight into the birth of comedy. According to Moosa, the main ingredient of laughter is pain. If something painful happened long enough ago, and you survived it, you can eventually laugh about it. "Pain and time equal comedy," says Moosa.
VIDEO - Backstage with The Comedy Doctor: Group Editors catch up with Dr Riaad Moosa after his show:
He took the audience on a political rollercoaster with hilarious imitations of Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Julius Malema. The subject of race and unity was tackled without hesitation, covering all groups, including white-whites, off-whites, Muslims, coloureds, blacks and Indians.
The Palestinian and Israeli conflict; Trump's statements on South Africa; apartheid and the woke movement - it all came under scrutiny.
The point? We all feel separate in some way, but we want the same thing - to belong and be accepted by our fellow humans. At the end of life, people's happiness depended on the state of their relationships, not their earthly possessions.
Earth is but a booger in the universe. This is the gist of Moosa's message, delivered in the most creative and funniest way possible. I guess you had to be there.
Moosa's take on life
- In 2 000 years from now, you will hear a Jewish person in Cape Point say, "Shalom, ma se kind". Because, by then, we will all be coloured.
- Dubai is like a Muslim theme park/no one in Dubai has their own lips - you don't know if you have to kiss a person, or give them antihistamine, because it looks like they've got an allergic reaction to shellfish.
- Trump must have weird thoughts. Like, everybody has weird thoughts, but it goes through a filter and then you say normal things. Trump thought the bullet going through his ear was a mosquito.
- Humankind is the only species that can see something that is not yet there, and manifest it.
