ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - The University of the Third Age (U3A) has lined up a diverse and fascinating programme for October, with talks, lectures and outings covering topics from foot health to wartime history, travel, forestry and even the world of plastic surgery.
All events will take place at Emmaüs Hall in Memorium Street, unless otherwise specified, and members may look forward to refreshments before most of the sessions.
Due to Heritage Day being a public holiday, the general meeting for September will be held on Wednesday 1 October at 10:30. Refreshments will be available at 10:00. At this meeting, the talk to be delivered by Dallas Fell is titled 'These feet were made for walking'.
Fell will explain how podiatrists are concerned with the examination, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot ailments by biomechanical, surgical and other treatment modalities.
Axis submarine operations
In the Friday lecture on 10 October, Johan Viljoen will talk about the Axis submarine operations off the South African coast during WWII. This is a repeat of a talk given in August.
In Armchair Travel on Wednesday 15 October, Dennis and Martha Woolard will talk about their trip exploring Normandy in France. They were fortunate to find accommodation in the Maison du Chapelain in the Château du Tallis, about 20km from the city of Rouen with its impressive cathedral and church dedicated to Joan of Arc. This meeting starts at 10:30.
On Wednesday 22 October, enthusiastic explorers under the guidance of Dalena Wolmarans will venture into the depths of the Knysna Forest at Diepwalle to look at some of the historical sites associated with the former thriving timber industry for which Knysna became famous.
Plastic surgery
In the Friday talk on 24 October, Dr Chetan Patel will talk about the fascinating world of plastic surgery and will discuss a brief history of cosmetic surgery before embarking on the psychology and social impact of this phenomenon in the 20th and 21st centuries. Refreshments will be available at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
In the general meeting on 29 October, five members of U3A will talk about some treasures in their homes. These include the Silver Wolf Scouting Award, a glass slipper and a cannonball, among others. Refreshments will be available at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
