ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the George community is once again invited to come together for a day of generosity and beautiful baking at the Spring Cake Fair on Saturday 12 September.
After the overwhelming success of last year’s event, during which the community turned out in the hundreds and raised R35 000 for Alexander Rhodes, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2023 at just 11 years old, one question remained: Why not do this for another local child facing cancer?
That vision led to the creation of Alexander’s Wish NPC, established in honour of Alexander, who inspired the community with this courageous spirit. He passed away in May this year.
Under the Alexander’s Wish banner, the Spring Cake Fair will continue as an annual fundraiser to bring hope and practical support to families facing childhood cancer.
This year’s beneficiary is Alba Overbeeke from Mossel Bay, affectionately known as ‘Alba the Brave’. She is a courageous 13-year-old girl who is facing her second battle with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).
After years of treatment, she celebrated five years cancer-free before being diagnosed with a relapse shortly after her 13th birthday.
She is currently undergoing intensive treatment in Cape Town and urgently needs a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant.
Spectacular cakes
The Spring Cake Fair is much more than a cake sale. More than 100 spectacular donated cakes, created by professional bakers, home bakers and cake artists, will be displayed in a stunning cake exhibition before being sold as whole cakes and by the slice.
Every purchase helps raise funds while creating awareness of childhood cancer and the challenges families face every day.

- Donate a cake: Bakers of all skill levels are invited to donate one or more cakes.
- Come and support the event: Bring your family and enjoy a day of incredible cakes, community spirit, and hope.
- Spread the word: Help raise awareness during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by sharing Alba’s story.
The fair will be held at the Trail Kiosk, Van Riebeeck Gardens. Viewing of the cakes takes place from 09:30 to 10:00, and the sales start at 10:00.
