We live in a strange era where anyone can give himself any title, or receive any title simply because it sounds important. The scary part is that people seem to simply accept it without question or verification and are even impressed by it.
Just for the heck of it I went onto a few websites of individuals and groups offering "specialised" services. I was amazed to see how many of these entrepreneurs have made themselves CEO's of their newly established one- two or three person enterprises. Apart from the fact that many of the websites are worded in poor English riddled with mistakes and have poorly home-made designs, there is no mention of board members, directors, senior executives or any corporate system. But, the owner calls him/ herself a CEO.
According to Businessdirectory.com a CEO is (among others):
"Top executive responsible for a firm's overall operations and performance. He or she is the leader of the firm, serves as the main link between the board of directors (the board) and the firm's various parts or levels, and is held solely responsible for the firm's success or failure. One of the major duties of a CEO is to maintain and implement corporate policy, as established by the board. Also called President or managing director, he or she may also be the chairman (or chairperson) of the board."
If you still insist on calling yourself a CEO or any other corporate or professional title please at least Google the word to see what it actually entails.
