George Chess Club ready for SA Open
GEORGE NEWS - It is again time for the SA Open Chess Championships and this year it will be hosted by the Western Province at Newlands.

The tournament takes place from 29 June to 8 July in the Newlands Rugby Stadium. The tournament draws players from across the world and to date three Grand Masters have entered. Players come from Egypt, England, Angola, Botswana and Zimbabwe, to name but a few countries.

The tournament is played in an Open Section and a B Section. The B Section is restricted to players that are younger than 18 and have a rating of less than 1500.

George Chess Club players that have entered the Open Section is Werner Ottervanger, Albert Visagie, Corne Naude and Terry Quirk. In the B Section Juandre Brits and Nicola Putter entered. Nicola, an under 10 player, came third at the South African Junior Chess Championship that was held in Port Elizabeth during December last year.

She was then invited to play in the South African Closed Championships where players are selected to represent South Africa. She did George and the Western Cape proud by again being placed third.
