Lolly Jackson murder accused in court
NATIONAL NEWS - Strip club boss Lolly Jackson's alleged killer George Luca will appear in a court in Cyprus on Tuesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.
"He is appearing today, but we currently have no word on what is happening. There will be an update later," NPA spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said.
On Saturday, Mhaga said the NPA had started extradition proceedings before Luca's arrest.
"We submitted our extradition application about a month ago, even before he was arrested... it's now with the department of justice. We have opted for the European submission route because we don't have a bilateral extradition treaty with Cyprus," he said.
"[Luca] will in all probability oppose our application and we will make submissions to the court he is appearing in."
In addition to the 2010 murder of Jackson, the owner of the Teazers strip club franchise, Luca is wanted for theft, possession of suspected stolen property and fraud, Mhaga said.
National police spokesman Lt-Col Vishnu Naidoo said Luca been on the run since 2010 and was now in the custody of Cypriot police.
Luca allegedly phoned Gauteng crime intelligence boss Joey Mabasa and confessed to killing Jackson shortly after the murder.
The arrest is the first step in numerous attempts by the SA police and the NPA to extradite Luca, who openly spoke to the media about his escape from South Africa after the killing.
He told the Sunday Times in a recent interview he wanted to talk to the South African police.
"But I don't think I will get a fair trial," he was quoted as saying.

George is getting its own biomass energy plant which will use sawdust to generate energy. Local companies are stockpiling tonnes of sawdust in anticipation of supplying the plant which is set to start operating next year. A huge economic boost for George. On the other hand, wood waste is a controversial issue that nobody seems to know how to deal with. It is combustible and if it does catch alight, smouldering wood piles are difficult to extinguish. The fine wood particles may also cause air pollution. Catch 22. Should local companies be allowed to stockpile sawdust for the plant?
Yes, it makes economic sense.
No, the risk is too high.
