SAPTU strikes at Fancourt
Fancourt
GEORGE NEWS - Employees of Plattner Golf PTY Ltd. who are members of the SAPTU trade union have issued notice to embark on strike action at Fancourt.

Carl Reinders, Sales and Marketing Director at Fancourt, yesterday morning confirmed that SAPTU gave notice that they are going on with a strike over salary increases. The planned strike will take place from 07:00 this morning.

A member of SAPTU, who doesn't want his name mentioned, told the George Herald that SAPTU wants a 10% wage increase because of the high living costs. "Fancourt doesn't want to give hearing to our claims so we don't have a choice other than to go on strike."

Reinders said the strike action by SAPTU members follows a process whereby all legislative avenues had been exhausted, with no resolution being reached by either parties on the wage increases and benefits being demanded.

"Fancourt has negotiated in good faith by being transparent throughout the process with respect to the company's current and recent financial performance, which has been severely affected by the global economic downturn and its resultant effect on tourism. Fancourt respects the union's constitutional right to strike and hopes that the union in turn will ensure disciplined and peaceful action by its members," Reinders said.

"Whilst the management team at Fancourt are taking the necessary steps to overcome these and other challenges in order to boost future revenue, the current company financials do not make provision for the inflated wage increase and benefits demanded by SAPTU which are way above the CPI (consumer price index) and bear no relation to the current economic situation in the region and the country overall, and are in fact more representative of demands to a company showing double digit growth in a booming economy."

"The Fancourt executive has made its position clear to the members of SAPTU, and we are hopeful that our staff will choose to engage positively in overcoming the challenges we face." According to Reinders it is difficult to say how many workers intend to strike as not all of the SAPTU members agree with the strike action and fear possible intimidation.
