Millions for sport recreation
12:00 (GMT+2), Thu, 16 August 2012
GEORGE NEWS - Thembalethu and New Dawn Park were awarded a total of R3,8-million for sport recreation by the SA Sports for Change Programme.

The SA Sports for Change Programme is a 2010 World Cup Legacy initiative, implemented by Sport and Recreation South Africa and supported by the German government.

This project is aimed at the prevention of violence through sport amongst children and youth of school-going age, who are inside and outside the schooling system.

It implements this through three key components namely: the construction of community level ball sport facilities which will serve as a draw card for these young people and children to come and play; the promotion of community and municipal ownership which should be realised through commitment from the municipality to maintain the facilities as well as interactive and extensive community participation throughout the lifecycle of the programme and the delivery of sport and life skills training.

Operation and maintenance committees have already been established, consisting of youth representatives from the area and an official from the Youth Office. This programme provides funds for the construction of kick-bouts, courts and pitches and associated equipment to a maximum of R3-million per municipality.

An amount of R1,8-million was allocated to Thembalethu and R1,2-million to New Dawn Park for the establishment of these facilities.
