Informal areas in George not on increase
Informal housing areas in George are not increasing, but the number of families is; the George Municipality is working on a plan to look after those families.
GEORGE NEWS - The number of informal housing areas in George is not on the increase, however it is a fact that there is an increase in households within those areas.

Mayor Charles Standers last week said that the number of informal areas in George has not increased: "The number is exactly the same, except for the fact that council expanded the existing informal area Syferfontein to provide for families in need. The fact that there's an increase in families in the informal areas is not just a local government problem but a national challenge, which all spheres as well as the private sector must address."

In George there are just under 4 400 families in 24 informal living areas.

According to Standers, all informal settlements in George are already provided with basic council services, including electricity.

The biggest informal area, Thembalethu is in the process of receiving additional serviced stands; about 5 000 families will benefit from this process. The cost of this project amounts to approximately R500-million.

If there is an increase in Syferfonteyn for whatever reason, there is an increase. And I see the number of shacks increasing by the day wherever I go. How does the municipality check its statistics?
