SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The Garden Route Botanical Gardens have in the region of 100 documented species of birds.
The richness of the species is due to the fact that there is a huge diversity of flowers, insects and habitat, making it the perfect area for birds to live.
Recently, money has been received by the Rowland and Leta Hill Trust and Halfway Toyota for the purpose of building a bird hide for the public's bird-viewing pleasure.
The hide will also be used for educational purposes and one of its intended functions is to kindle a love of birds amongst school children. The hide will be placed next to the big dam as this area is rich in bird life and affords the viewer uninterrupted views of the dam and its waterfowl. The bird hide will be modelled on the Malachite Bird Hide at Rondevlei.
Calendar
A date has been determined for Arbour Week tree sale and is to take place between 1 and 7 September - the first time it has been held at the gardens - and is the brainchild of the Nursery Volunteer Team.
"We have selected a host of interesting locally indigenous trees and are trying to source these at the best prices. The sale will start on Saturday the 1 September, through Monday to Friday, from 09:00 - 15:00 each day. The nursery will be closed on Sunday. We are trying to build awareness around the need to plant trees and support urban greening initiatives, so please support us," said curator Dayne de Wet.
Fundraiser
On 5 and 6 October, the Fynbos Eco Festival will be held at the gardens as the main fundraiser: "Our largest annual fundraiser, the Fynbos Festival, is an eco-festival, showcasing all our conservation organisations and a host of interesting talks and demos. The festival centres around a large indigenous plant sale and there will be loads of delicious food, music and a great outdoor atmosphere. Again, this is the perfect way for you to support the organisation and we really do treasure your support."
