Fiat 500 L comes with built-in espresso machine

The 500L is the first standard-production car to offer a true espresso coffee machine as option in Europe.

MOTORING NEWS - Fiat still turns heads - even on a fairly modest car. The latest news from Italy is the new Fiat 500L can be fitted with an integrated espresso machine. The new 500L model is an elongated version of the well-loved 500 mini-car.

"Another world first is the brand new coffee machine created in collaboration with Lavazza," the Fiat release reads. "The 500L is the first standard-production car to offer a true espresso coffee machine that utilises the technology of the 'A Modo Mio' pods. It is perfectly integrated in the car with a deck designed expressly for the purpose."

The picture shows the espresso machine is a narrow, portable unit that slides into a compartment in the center console. Although Fiat treated the espresso machine in a matter of fact way, news of the option has caused quite a stir. CNN reported the option was criticised in the USA where it was claimed it is another potential contributor to dangerous distracted driving. Fiat has since clarified that the espresso machine can only be operated when the car is parked. During driving it remains locked in its dock.

This model is unlikely to get to markets outside Italy and Europe although Fiat has said that no official decision has been made. Espresso is most popular in Italy and Europe. Fiat held an introduction ceremony for the European 500L earlier this month. The new car is expected to launch in North America in 2013 and South Africans can also expect to see it on local shores during the course of 2013.
