GEORGE NEWS - Wessel's Martial Arts Academy send three students to attempt black belt in the system of Goju Ryu Karate-do under South African Goju Ryu Karate-do, an affiliated organiation under Karate-do International and all three graded.

Well-known local martial arts competitor and gold medal winner, Anuschka Zaayman, as well as Noël Scholtz and Dylan Wentzel spent the last 6 months refining their skills in preparation for this big event.

Receiving a black belt in this international organisation in no easy achievement and carries the international accreditation of Karate-do International under the leadership of Kancho Rony Kluger.

All three participants were rigorously tested on basic execution of techniques (kihon), formal patterns (kata), randori (free fighting), ippon kumite (one time attacks), bunkai (self-defence), as well as physical fitness and conditioning (hojo undo).

After the examination it was clear that the grading panel, who consisted of top graded martial arts instructors (shihan André van Vuuren (6th dan), sensei Wessel Wilms (4th dan), sensei Kobus Klue (4th dan), sensei Elrié Bosman (3rd dan), sensei Wouter Pretorius (3rd dan) and sensei Wessel Boonzaaier (3rd dan), was highly impressed by their high standard and top quality.

Scholtz performed in fine style and received his well deserved senior black belt. Wentzel, the youngest of the three participants, received his Junior Shodan (black belt under 18) with high praise from the grading panel.
Zaayman received her senior black belt with flying colours and will now compete in the Western Cape All Style tournament as an official black belt.

Sensei Wessel, who will be leaving for Israel for an international martial arts gathering to further his studies in the art of traditional Okinawan Weaponary, and his wife, sensei Elrié, are proud of their students achievements
and will now start preparing their students for the next big event, the African Goju Karate Federation championships in October.
