SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The u.13 SWD rugby team ended fifth on the 41st Coca-Cola Under-13 Craven Week tournament log which was held in Bloemfontein last week.
Sixteen teams, including WP, the Pumas, Namibia, North West, Zimbabwe and the Blue Bulls took part.
Our district's team started the week by beating the hosts, Free State, on day one by 15-10. This was followed by a 15-0 victory over Limpopo on the second day, with two tries scored by Ricaldo Steyn, and a conversion and penalty by kicker, Pieter Uys.
On day three, SWD faced the Blue Bulls in the Free State Stadium. Our juniors started well (leading 7-5 at half time) but lost the game 28-5. Shaunton Prins scored the only try for the SWD. The Bulls team were ultimately crowned Craven Week champions.
In their final game against Boland, the SWD team were ahead in the first half by 12-0. In the second half, contentious refereeing decisions were compounded by unnecessary mistakes made by SWD players. The final result was 22-12 in favour of Boland.
Team manager, Mr Elton Titus felt that the young players from our district have every reason to hold their heads high after their performance in this tournament. Last year the SWD finished in 16th place.
Titus added that the team was definitely successful in their "Mission Impossible" task.
Players who performed well over the week include Darryn Fortuin, Thomas Fouche, Conrad Ackerman, Pietie Uys, Ricaldo Steyn, Azanathi Ntlabakanyi, JP Terblanche, Emilo Pietersen and Shaunton Prins.
