Eden looks into Vic Bay complaints

GEORGE NEWS - Eden District this week responded to the calls for security to be stepped up at the Victoria Bay campsite, following an article in the George Herald regarding numerous robberies in the past few months.

Eden's Regional Coordinator - Tourism and Resorts, Fathima Watney responded by saying that the complaint received from Casper Rossouw of Kroonstad is under investigation.

The Rossouws recently had a grim holiday experience, when they were relieved of all their valuables during a day-time burglary at the campsite, during the weekend of 24 June. "It must be noted that, whilst Eden District Municipality provides reasonable security, it is the responsibility of the campers to ensure that their valuables are secured. Secondly, in terms of security, the only area that Eden District Municipality is responsible for is the enclosed camping area.

The rest of Victoria Bay falls under the jurisdiction of George Municipality and the safety aspect of this area should be referred to the George Municipality's Law Enforcement division for comment. The parameters around Victoria Bay Caravan Park are currently being discussed with the Law Enforcement division of George Municipality.

"Thirdly, Eden District Municipality will be addressing other safety measures that can be implemented to further secure the caravan park in the new financial year and this is dependent on available funding."

Eden is currently facing a claim of R500 000 from Dr Francois du Toit, who feels that campers should be warned of the crime risks they are running when using the campsite.
