Focus on eyes

LIFESTYLE NEWS - Pterygium (also known to some as Surfer's Eye) is a triangular fibrovascular subepithelial ingrowth of degenerative bulbar conjunctival tissue over the limbus onto the cornea.

None of that make any sense? It's okay, here is a more understandable explanation. A pterygium is that red growth in the inside of your eyes that feels like sand in your eyes.

Pterygia typically develops in people who live in hot climates and may represent a response to chronic dry eye and prolonged UV exposure. It is thought that the main causes are dry eyes, UV exposure, low humidity, wind and even dust.

Prevention and treatment

Proper sunglasses to reduce UV exposure and decrease the growth stimulus.
Tear substitutes for symptomatic relief.
Optical steroids for inflammation.

Have an eye examination. It is never a good idea to self-diagnose anything. Even though you are quite sure you know what you're struggling with, it is best to have an eye care practitioner have a look at it first. Other dangerous ocular conditions may also present with similar signs.

If it becomes too large it may cause vision problems and surgery will be indicative.
It is important to have it checked out by an eye care practitioner or doctor, because if the growth reaches a certain point on the cornea it may cause permanent ocular and sight threatening damage.
