Sunshine Tour announces new match play event
12:47 (GMT+2), Mon, 25 June 2012
NATIONAL NEWS - The Sunshine Tour's 'summer swing' is set to tee off with a new tournament in October, the organisers announced on Monday.

The R2-million ISPS HANDA South African Match Play Championship would be played between October 29 and November 4 at Zwartkop Country Club -- the first match play event to be played on the Sunshine Tour since the 1990s.

"We are thrilled that the Sunshine Tour has a match play event on the schedule again," Sunshine Tour executive director Selwyn Nathan said in a statement.

"Match play is such an exciting format, and many players don't often get the chance to encounter it in tournament play once they turn professional."

The event would include disabled and blind golfers, according to Midori Miyazaki, the executive director of international affairs for the International Sports Promotion Society (ISPS).

"Both men's and women's professional golf around the world has provided an excellent platform to promote blind and disabled golf and we know that this event with the Sunshine Tour will further our goal for golf to get into the Paralympics," Miyazaki said.

The 16-man field for the disabled match play division would include a number of players from the ISPS supported On Course Foundation.

The foundation gives members of the British Armed Forces who have been seriously injured the opportunity to play golf and be employed within the golf industry.

"This is a very exciting opportunity for disabled golf and is a wonderful platform to highlight disabled golf in South Africa as well as the skills of our players," said Eugene Vorster of the SA Disabled Golf Association.
