GEORGE NEWS -- A variety of visual aids were demonstrated to members of the support group for the blind and visually impaired at their second monthly meeting at Murray House.
Their special guest, local optometrist, Kevin Tiran brought a huge variety of aids along, including electronic magnifiers, spectacle telescopes that can be used for viewing sport or TV, stand magnifiers with built-in lighting, as well as hand and clip-on magnifiers.
Talking to some of the members, it becomes evident how clever gadgets can make life easier for them, such as talking clocks and watches, talking phones, talking computers and advanced electronic reading aids. These products help to make them more independent, but as one of the members, Derek Jacques pointed out, society does not adapt to anyone with a disability - they have to adapt to society. For example, the screens and keyboards of autobanks are becoming increasingly smaller, something that the ordinary person would not have noticed.
Another member, the 93-year-old Joan Moffett has been an avid reader all her life, but her eyesight has deteriorated to such an extent that she cannot enjoy this favourite pastime anymore. But she remains thankful for the many years that she has had to read, she says.
The support group, established by Derek's wife Jackie, wants to offer a supportive atmosphere where individuals can adjust to the loss of sight. "Members learn about resources that are available for assistance, we discuss strategies to regain independence and members receive information about eye conditions," says Jackie.
"Everyone also gets the opportunity to share their experiences and frustrations, and we cultivate a positive attitude."
Jackie has glaucoma, but because of her husband's condition, she has learnt to be aware and was therefore diagnosed early. "Because of the prescription drops that I use every night, I will not go blind," she says.
Sighted people are welcome to join the support group. Phone Jackie on 044 877 0409 for more information.
