KZN cop and robber wounded in shoot-out
09:33 (GMT+2), Fri, 08 June 2012
NATIONAL NEWS - A policeman and a suspected robber were wounded in a shootout in KwaDukuza on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Colonel Jay Naicker said police reacted to an armed robbery at 10am on the King Shaka Road.

"A woman who was on her way to make a deposit at a local bank was approached by six unknown, armed men who robbed her of a bag with an undisclosed amount of cash."

He said patrolling police saw the robbery and approached the armed men.

A shootout ensued in which a policeman and a 29-year-old armed robber were wounded.

"Police arrested another man, 35, while the four remaining suspects fled on foot."

Naicker said a pistol was seized and the woman's bag, containing the money, was recovered.

The Durban Flying Squad and Durban K9 Unit later arrested another man, aged 30, who was believed to be one of the armed robbers.

He was arrested while driving a stolen car. A firearm and seven rounds of ammunition were seized.

"Both the wounded policeman and the suspect were taken to hospital where the suspect will remain under police guard," said Naicker.

All three of the men arrested faced charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, he said.

They were expected to appear soon in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court.
