Update: Police captain in court
04:00 (GMT+2), Thu, 31 May 2012
GEORGE NEWS - A police captain appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of intimidation and defeating the ends of justice. He was arrested at the George Police Station last Thursday.

The charges against Capt. Adam Plaatjies are related to a rape case (which Plaatjies was not involved in) against a local tavern owner who was arrested over the Easter weekend, and the intimidation of the victim.

The incidents are being investigated by senior officers from the office of the Provincial Commissioner in Cape Town.
The suspect in the rape case was also arrested on Thursday. His name may not be publicised until he has pleaded. Both men were released on R500 bail each. The case was postponed to 8 June.

Plaatjies, who is allegedly a friend of the rape accused, has been temporarily suspended.

A departmental investigation is also underway after the rape accused was released from the Conville police station by two different police officials over the Easter weekend. The reason for his release was apparently because he was ill and required medical attention. It is alleged that the police officials drove around with the suspect for several hours and made stops at his tavern in Rosemoor and Plaatjies' house in Pacaltsdorp.

According to a source, the rape victim has been intimidated by friends of the tavern owner since the alleged incident took place. She has allegedly been offered money to drop the charges against her attacker.

The George Herald has learnt that the victim will possibly be placed in the witness protection programme for safety.
The owner of the tavern will appear in the George Magistrate's Court again today on the rape charges.
