Western Cape police watch Botrivier protest

NATIONAL NEWS - Western Cape police were keeping watch on a protest in Botrivier on Monday afternoon.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said about 800 residents took to the streets in the morning to protest against poor service delivery,

"Tear gas and rubber bullets had to be used to disperse a violent crowd, which blockaded two entrances to the town."

He said one man was arrested on Monday and charged with public violence.

A meeting was held on Monday afternoon with local community leaders and councillilors.

"The crowd grew smaller. About 350 protesters were moving to the local sportsfield where they will be addressed by the community leaders and a memorandum will also be handed over," Filander said.

He described the situation on Monday afternoon as calm with police still keeping watch.
