INTERNATIONAL NEWS - A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman has called a U.S. State Department report on China's human rights situation irresponsible and biased.
Hong Lei told reporters Friday in Beijing that the China section of the annual State Department human rights report was "baseless, biased and completely wrong."
The report released Thursday said China's human rights situation deteriorated in 2011, with more aggressive silencing of activists.
The report came soon after Chinese legal activist Chen Guangcheng escaped house arrest and sought shelter at the U.S. Embassy. Chen has since been allowed to travel to New York to study.
Hong said Beijing wants to hold talks with other countries on human rights but can't accept interference in China's internal affairs.
