Rescue of trapped miners continues
14:17 (GMT+2), Thu, 24 May 2012
NATIONAL NEWS - Rescuers have completed their assessment, following the location of two illegal miners trapped in a disused goldmine in Johannesburg on Thursday, emergency workers said.

"The mine rescue team did their assessment. We are now waiting for the department of mineral and energy affairs' recommendation for getting the miners out before proceeding," Johannesburg emergency management services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.

The men, both Zimbabweans, were in a group mining illegally for gold in a disused shaft at Durban Deep on the West Rand. They were caught in a rockfall shortly after midnight. Six illegal miners, all Zimbabweans, managed to escape and raise the alarm. A further five illegal miners had since emerged from the mine, and were helping emergency services with any information that could help the two trapped miners.

Mulaudzi said earlier on Thursday there could be more miners underground, but efforts were currently focused on getting the two out of the mine.
