Dawning of a new visual arts era
Directly after forming South Cape Association for the Visual Arts (SCAVA) are Anriet van Deventer (facilitator), Ken Smith (chairman), and Bill Bennett (treasurer).
SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - A new South Cape Association for the Visual Arts (SCAVA) branch has now been formed in George with the intention of bringing together all those with an interest in the visual arts.

"Whether it be artists in paint, pottery, sculpting, wood, photography, fashion, glass, beads, cards or embroidery. Also clubs and groups associated with the visual arts, or framers, material suppliers and galleries, or collectors, connoisseurs and buyers, or corporate bodies wanting to support the visual arts." So said SCAVA's new chairman, Ken Smith.

This week he announced SCAVA's aims, "We plan to have four major exhibitions or fairs annually for all its members. The promotion and assistance with forming local groups within the South Cape is another aim. The organisation plans monthly get-togethers, lunches, regular news letters, achievement awards for primary schools and teaching courses."

Anriet van Deventer, manager of Strydoms Gallery, acted as the facilitator with Ken Smith and Bill Bennett assisting on behalf of the George Artists Club (whose members have formed SCAVA by means of a change of name). The management and committee of the new association will continue with the day-to-day running of SCAVA until September this year, when an annual general meeting of SCAVA will be held.

The official launch of SCAVA will be held at the Masonic Hall on Saturday 2 June. This follows directly after Strydoms Gallery has held their Annual South Cape Winter Exhibition selectors talk at the Marklaan Centre. Smith invites all interested in the visual arts to the association's exhibition at the Masonic Hall that day from 10:00 until 15:00, and for a free buffet lunch and drinks at 13:00. Forms for joining (membership is R75 per annum) can be obtained from SCAVA and will also be available at Strydoms Gallery from 26 to 29 May and 2 June. For more information contact Smith at tel 044 874 4878.

*The return on Investment in South African Visual Arts last year was 10,2%. There is a growing interest in South African visual art within the European auction houses. Paul Mashile, Minister of Arts and Culture, last year said, "The arts and culture industry has become one of the key drivers of job creation and growth. The sector contributed R2-billion to the South African economy".

*The South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), is strictly non-political. It inherited perpetual representation on the Board of Trustees of the SA National Gallery and in 2005 was re-admitted as a member of the International Association of Art. It has 30 branches as well as 27 affiliated organisations, art galleries, museums, corporate bodies and academic institutions. Corporate bodies include major banking groups.
