Overwhelming support for Milk Producers’ Organisation
09:56 (GMT+2), Wed, 23 May 2012
AGRI NEWS - Almost 80% of all milk producers in the country have already given permission for the Milk Producers’ Organisation’s (MPO) first membership fee increase in 19 years.

The MPO plans to increase the existing voluntary membership fee from 0,4 cent per litre to 0,5 cent per litre from 1 July on recommendation of the board of directors. This will enable the MPO to continue with and further improve its essential services.

The current membership fee was introduced in 1992 by the former Milk Board as a levy and has been in force since 1 January 1993. Since then, the MPO has developed a comprehensive range of services for its members and the organisation has a proven record as South Africa’s foremost producer organisation.

As a dynamic organisation, the MPO strives to constantly adjust its services and align itself to the changing needs of the modern milk producer. In this regard a need arose for the MPO to fill the void created by inadequate support and service provision. Examples are the provision of market-related information, the monitoring of illegal and substandard dairy imports, generic promotion and product quality in conjunction with the secondary industry.

Mr Dèan Kleynhans, chairman of the MPO, said the fact that milk producers agreed to increased membership fees under difficult economic conditions proves that milk producers believe that the MPO’s current and planned services make a significant contribution in ensuring the sustainable production of high quality milk.
