Cape Town museum burgled
10:47 (GMT+2), Tue, 22 May 2012
NATIONAL NEWS - A Cape Town museum with valuable exhibits of 18th and 19th century household items has been burgled, the Cape Times reported on Tuesday.

Staff at the Manor House, on the Groot Constantia wine farm, opened the museum on Monday morning to find a number of items missing.

Iziko Museums chief executive Rooksana Omar declined to say what had been stolen or what their value was. It was also not clear how the burglars gained entry.

"Iziko Museums proactively seeks to protect and secure its collections from such occurrences. Despite these precautions, our collections still remain vulnerable," Omar said.

"The theft of heritage objects is an international phenomenon. Museums across the globe are battling an ever-increasing number of targeted onslaughts."

The exhibitions contained furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, brass and copperware found in the houses of successful Cape farmers.

Police were investigating the theft.
