GEORGE NEWS - The Victory Walk for Esther Watson, director of the Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge (OCC), who is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with leukaemia, is today.
The 4km walk will start from George South Primary School at 09:00. The entry fee is R10 per person.
It was a shock to the community when Esther was diagnosed in March. She is well-known for her dedication and relentless campaigning for people with physical disabilities in the local community.
"Esther is a woman of action and not just words," says Ansie Swart, coordinator of the Victory Walk.
She says that when the first OCC event was only a dream in people's minds, Esther was the one who was willing to take on the challenge. "Esther does not just look around and see things that need attention. She takes action."
Esther travels to Cape Town once a week for chemotherapy. She will be undergoing intensive chemotherapy in April and May. After this, a bone marrow transplant will be performed if a suitable donor can be found.
The walk will raise funds for her escalating medical bills and travelling expenses.
A large variety of stalls will be available at the start with eats and various other fare for sale.
