Palestinian goods to be labelled
11:40 (GMT+2), Fri, 18 May 2012
NATIONAL NEWS - Products manufactured in the occupied Palestinian territories would, in future, carry labels stating their place of origin before being sold in South Africa.

The announcement was made in the Government Gazette by the department of trade and industry, Beeld reported on Friday.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said on Wednesday night that certain products were being sold in South Africa bearing labels stating they were manufactured in Israel.

"These products are actually being manufactured in the occupied territories. We would like to make it possible for South Africans who do not support Israel, but who in fact do support the Palestinians, to identify those products."

Davies said South Africa only recognised Israel's territory as it was defined in guidelines determined in 1948 by the United Nations.

Davies said interested parties were welcome to comment on the announcement in the Government Gazette.

"This doesn't, however, mean any kind of boycott of Israeli products," he said.
