Limpopo to sell overstocked medicine
15:43 (GMT+2), Mon, 14 May 2012
NATIONAL NEWS - The Limpopo health department is planning to sell oversupplied medicine to other provinces to ensure stock was used before it expired.

"We have more medicines of what we don't need and less of what we need. We have got the warehouse that can supply the whole country," said department MEC Norman Mabasa on Monday.

"I will be making an announcement to other MECs that they must not waste money buying somewhere, they can buy from us. We can even give [to] them on discount."

The decision was taken following the department recording a R14 million loss due to oversupplied medicines expiring within its warehouse.

The problem was exacerbated by a moratorium to stop the distribution of starvodine, used by people living with Aids, following advice it had negative side effects.

The department also intended distributing milk for babies through the Limpopo social development department.

Mabasa said the problem was discovered when the department took over warehousing in March.
