INTERNATIONAL NEWS - The European Commission insisted Monday that it is dedicated to keeping Greece in the eurozone, after its president appeared to suggest in an interview that Athens should leave if it doesn't stick by its financial promises.
"If a member of a club - I'm not now going to speak about any specific country - if a member of a club does not respect the rules of the club, it's better not to remain in the club," Jose Manuel Barroso had told Italian broadcaster Sky Tg24 on Thursday.
On Monday, however, his spokeswoman said the president was speaking about "a general consideration" and not specifically about Greece.
"We see Greece's future in the euro. We want Greece to remain in the euro because we believe ... that this is the best solution for Greece, for the Greek people and for Europe as a whole," Pia Ahrenkilde said ahead of a meeting in Brussels of eurozone finance ministers.
