GEORGE NEWS - The weekend saw the penultimate week of fixtures for the George United Football Club youth football tournament with all the age groups getting fiercely competitive for positions and each point being of vital importance.
In the u.12 section the first game was between 1st place Leopards and 3rd place Feyeenoord, in a tight and highly physical game between two sides that didn't want to give an inch to the opposition.
The game changer in this match was Arian Ourteav who made the most of the little chances he had and went on to score twice for Leopards winning the game 2-0.
Rangers took three points in their games to keep the pressure on Leopards, making the mid-week meeting between Leopards and Rangers a must win for both teams.
A match of excellent football was seen between Falcons and 7 Stars with the latter taking early control of the game, scoring twice. Falcons began to fight back and take control of the game and made numerous chances to score, but thanks to some desperate defending 7 Stars won the game 2-1.
The final game was a close game between Ramaposa and Cobras which ended in a 1-1 draw.
With the final game of the under tournament taking place next Saturday there will be lots of twists and turns in this age group's winners, with all the players looking forward to the knock-out cup competition over the next few weeks, in order to build them up before the big regional tournament to be hosted by George United Football Club and Tekkie Town over the Youth Day weekend at Outeniqua Stadium.
With 32 teams coming from East London, Port Elizabeth Cape Town and many other places this tournament is fast becoming one of the biggest of its kind in the whole of the Western Cape.
In the u.15 section the first game was between 7 Stars and Ramaposa. Thanks to some good defending and goalkeeping the 7 Stars players managed to keep Ramaposa at bay until mid way though the 2nd half when the pressure finally took its toll and Ramaposa took full advantage scoring two quick goals and making the final score 2-0 to Ramaposa.
The final game in the u.15 competition was between SuperStrikers and Eagles and, after some initial pressure from the Super Strikers team, Eagles began to control and dominate the game. Thanks to some effective finishing from Declan O'Kelly and Levi Lombard they manage to take another three points with the final score being 2-0.
In the last weekend of league fixtures, the medals and trophies will be given out next week to the champions of each age group.
A knock-out cup competition will then be held over the next month. The season will then reopen with the u.15 and u.7 tournament.
