Man killed in N1 crash

NATIONAL NEWS - A man was killed and five others were injured in a three vehicle pile up on the N1 north near the New Road offramp in Johannesburg, paramedics said on Thursday.
Metro police spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said traffic was backed up heavily on this route due to the accident. All the lanes were closed around 10pm on Thursday in order for a medical helicopter to land on the highway.
One critically injured man was airlifted to a nearby hospital, said Jeff Wicks, Netcare911 spokesman.
"Common cause information indicates that three light motor vehicles which were travelling in the same direction, collided."
Wicks said the other injured were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals.
