SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - Anglers met at Port Alfred to compete in the 2012 RASSPL National Angling Championships that was held over the past long weekend, fishing between the Great Fish River and the Kariega River Mouth over a period of three days.
A total of 112 anglers from around the country represented there Provinces in waters that are very productive, with wonderful prizes at stake, including an Ammarok bakkie up for grabs. Mathew Sumner, Mike & Rene Pautz, Thyse Erasmus and Lester Botha represented Southern Cape and ended second to the Border Black Tips. Third was the Eastern Province Raggies and fourth the Western Province Bronzies.
This fairly new angling franchise supports all conservation and marine laws whereby members operate on a 'Catch and Release' method; this has gained compliments in all avenues from the public even although a licensed angler may kill his permitted daily catch.
Yes, 956 fish were caught with only one was not making the grade, the heaviest shark was a Ragged Tooth of 177 kg caught by Henning Venter from Western Province, the biggest skate an Eagle ray of 17.6 kg caught on a slide by Mathew Sumner while Mike Pautz was in the running with his 11 kg White Steenbras for the biggest edible, but his glory was short lived when Ryan Reeves landed an enormous Kob of 45.6 kg. This fish was measured, photographed and released, swimming away to give yet another angler the joys of angling some other day.
The Ammarock bakkie was almost won.. the heaviest Blue Fish (Pens en Derms, Jan Bruin, JB, Bronze Bream) over 4 kg would have seen the angler driving home in a new bakkie, well Murphy's law had it all planned, the East wind that blew prior to the competition brought in cold water which the Blue Fish certainly don't like, although seven were landed with the biggest weighing in at 3.8 kg, what a close shave!
The RASSPL franchise is to be launched here in the Southern Cape by Mike Pautz and Matthew Sumner. Interested parties can contact Matthew on 073 416 5009 or Mike on 082 771 3382. A special meeting will be held on Thursday, 10 May at Bibiki Hartenbos Resort, Mossel Bay at 18:00 sharp.
